Throughout history, significant moments have been defined by an individuals ability to make a stand fueled by both bravery and the need for change. The very second that person rises above others and say, “no more” they have consciously decided something needs to be done. And so my segue for activism; a desire to make changes through multiple efforts in order to promote or make a change in society. Historically, activism has been used in many forms to initiate awareness and or change for a perceived greater good. Performed in a variety of ways we have seen activism take place in the streets, economically and hacktivism to name a few.

Well, today is my Spartacus moment as a daddy activist. Although Spartacus lead 6000 slaves in what was known as the Third Serville War, I am rather hoping to rally a few dads to join my efforts through the form of collective action. A chance to combine our efforts in order to make a different kind of change. A change that has been long overlooked by society and is needed across the country. A change that will help dads avoid anymore future awkward situations. That’s right, I am talking about trying to find a changing table in a men’s restroom for my child. Seriously, how hard can this be? Despite being a diaper slinger for four years and two children, I cannot count how many times I have faced the challenges of trying to change a diaper in supermarkets, grocery stores or public parks. Because of this, I have had to adapt by changing diapers on the grass, behind a tree, or in our car, way too many times. My favorite one, was on top of a trash can inside a popular gear store (should have used one of their display tents.)

Now trust me when I say a lot of thought has gone into my Repertoire of contention, first introduced by Charles Tilly. According to MIT Press, this can include digital tactics used in the pursuit of social activism. Which, in my humble opinion is a better option than a hunger strike especially because I like gummy bears, ice cream and well…food in general. Another tool considered was going on a daddy strike. But, as a stay home daddy and domestic engineer, I am pretty sure my family would quickly form their own Repertoire of contention. So, this is why I am leaning towards the Internet/ digital activism. More specifically, change.org. Here I started a petition, “Dad’s Change Diapers Too.”
Now I bequeath you dads who find yourselves in my situation to let your digital voices be heard. Honestly, this petition has been going well but can get stronger. So if you are feeling brave and want to tell your children about your wild crazy days as a digital activist then please sign the petition.
