Time to address a reality in our busy lives. That nesessary trip of grocery shopping. Well, if any of you are in my situation then you know what is next, taking the kiddos. But let this not be a painful trip, rather see it as another opportunity to engage and teach.
Before starting a shopping trip, we first decide if the basket is a rocket ship, race car or helicopter. With the engines warmed up, off we go, first entering the Cucurbitaceae section. Here is where we talk about the factors that determine which of these melons are going home with us. Picking one up, I explain to my two year old daughter about checking for the sweet smell of the cantaloupe. Or landing a “knock knock” joke on the melon’s rind to listen for the sound of perfection. I will go on the record here, I am still not sure what is more enjoyable, the expressions of other shoppers looking curiously at us or me registering their smiles as a vote of approval. Either way, and regardless, we are having fun.

To really shake things up. I will let them randomly pick an item. Today, Cassi picked a lemon and a mango. Another time while pushing his own cart, my son loaded up a can of pineapples, strawberries and sweet peas. Engine still in full throttle, we continue up and down the isles talking about anything that comes to mind. Yummies and yuckies (debatable), proteins and carbs, reading labels out loud, I continue to blabber away.

Be forewarned and prepared for the meltdowns, I’ve had them come as early as aisle two. So, in the case of emergency, turn the cart around and let them lead. Keep pushing forward, keep the rocket engines rumbling and get to the check out quick. Oh, just in case you did not turn those smiles of approval upside down, make sure to ride on the basket and let out a “yeeeeeha” as you make your way to the checkout.

Again, just have fun, and if you are not having fun then do something else. As for me, I have to figure out dinner with a grapefruit, lemon, mango and coffee.
